Math
We continued with solving problems using estimation. Think about the following problem:

A TV station shows 16 minutes of commercials from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm every day. About how many days would it take to air about 100 000 minutes of commercials?

The word "about" tells you the problem is an estimation problem.
The important numbers are 16 minutes and 100 000 minutes.
The question is "How many DAYS to air 100 000 minutes?".

You are trying to figure out how many blocks / groups of 16 minutes fit into 100 000.
If you had a calculator you could divide 100 000 by 16 and get an answer pretty easily.

100 000 minutes  ÷ 16 minutes of commercials per day = 6250 days

Check your answer: 16 x 6250 = 100 000

But if you don't have a calculator, 16 is not a particularly easy number to work with, so your first decision is to change 16 to a benchmark number that is easy to divide into 100 000. Magic tens are always easier to work with, so you might round 16 minutes to 20 minutes.

100 000 minutes ÷ 20 minutes of commercials per day = ?

Hmm....

100 000 ÷ 2 = 50 000 (half of 100 thousands is 50 thousands)

100 000 ÷ 20 = 5000 (100 thousands ÷ 20 is 5 thousands because 5 x 20 = 100)

So if you round 16 minutes to 20 minutes then the number of days to air 100 000 minutes of commercials is about 5000 days.

NOW here's the thinking part. Because you rounded the 16 minutes up to 20 minutes, is your estimate higher or lower than the actual answer?

To help with the division try these:

Figure out how many bills or coins make up $100,000.
• How many $100 bills are in $100,000?
• How many $50 bills are in $100,000?
• How many $20 bills are in $100,000?
• How many $10 bills are in $100,000?
• How many $5 bills are in $100,000?
• How many $2 coins are in $100,000?
• How many $1 coins are in $100,000?
• How many quarters are in $100,000?
• How many dimes are in $100,000?
• How many nickels are in $100,000?
Social Studies
So far we have discussed the landforms in the Cordillera and the climate. On Monday we will list the factors that affect climate and the factors that affect weather. Watch the video again to make sure you understand the difference between climate and weather. The factors affecting both are also listed in the video.

Next up.... natural resources in the Cordillera. How can we responsibly use the gifts from God?

Science
Test are done...phew! Please bring in your handout COMPLETED for tomorrow. I want to make sure everyone is on the right track for the project. Remember you make your animal at home. The habitat is created at school. If you do a GOOGLE image search "habitat diorama" you can get some cool ideas.

Media Literacy
Some students had some difficulty finding the message to the video. Listen to it again. What is the singer trying to tell you to do?

Reminders:
  • Bring material on Thursday, December 7th to construct your habitat. You must have a shoe box or a similar sized box.
  • Permission form and money for trip to see "The Star" THIS FRIDAY. Many students have not submitted forms.
  • Permission form and money for "Alice in Wonderland" next week. Only a few students remaining to submit permission forms and money.
  • Mass on Wednesday @ 9:30 at St. George. Please practice your readings and how to bow to show reverence if you are reading.
  • Many students forgot Word Study notebooks / duotangs at home. Bring them on Monday.
We have many things to finish and fun activities from now until Christmas. Please be responsible.
