Literacy
Some amazing big ideas about the message of "Shin-chi's Canoe" including....

  • Learn from the mistakes made in the past e.g. Residential Schools
  • Respect the cultures of others even if they are different than your own
  • All children should be treated with respect no matter what their culture
  • Never forget your culture because it is an important part of who you are
WOW! Tomorrow you will finish the proof part of your answer.

No words this week with Halloween. We will have reading groups on Friday this week.

Math
Much better understanding of measuring and constructing angles. Keep practicing drawing different angles and measuring angles INSIDE of polygons. Tomorrow we will finish our angle creatures. Some extra practice for tonight:
https://www.mathplayground.com/rocket_angles.html
https://www.mathplayground.com/alienangles.html
http://www.abcya.com/measuring_angles.htm

Finish your angle booklet.

Computers
Last in-class day to complete Power Point. If you are still not finished, you must stay in at lunch recesses.

Religion
Practice your parts for the play "The Captain's Faith". You will be presenting next week.

Science
Today we talked about a few more types of structural and behavioral adaptations:
  • Mimicry
  • Warning Coloration
  • Learned Behavior
  • Body Coverings
  • Camouflage
  • Migration
  • Hibernation
  • Social Behavior

Which picture show each of the above types of adaptations?

Reminders:
  • Halloween Bowling and orange and black day tomorrow
  • Return your blue word notebook if you forgot it

Sunday 29 October 2017

Happy Sunday Magnificent Minions!

Word test tomorrow!
Return your purple duo-tang with your blue notebook!
Math
Common mistakes on worksheet:

  • Finding right angles within shapes
  • Reading the protractor

Most of you could identify if an angle was more or less than a 90 degrees, but you didn't apply the knowledge. Many students identified an angle as less than 90 degrees, then wrote 150 degrees as the answer. Does that make sense?

Just a few reminders for tomorrow:

  • Complete your Prodigy assignment. Only 8 students have logged into Prodigy!
  • Orange and black day on Tuesday.
Review for adaptations:

Wednesday 25 October 2017

Literacy
Today we finished reading "Shin-chi's Canoe". Tomorrow you will formulate a main idea answer from your stick notes with your group. Remember to use our shared answer as a guide.

Because of the PD Day on Friday, we will be having our word test on Monday. Practice exercises are also due Monday.

Math
The problem today in math made you think...... When we are constructing polygons with certain size angles, the angles are INSIDE  the polygon.

Try this:
Construct an irregular decagon  If you forget what a decagon is, watch the video link below. Identify the angles inside the polygon as:

  • greater than 0 degrees but less than half a right angle
  • half a right angle
  • greater than half a right but less than a right angle
  • a right angle
  • greater than a right angle, less than a straight angle
Example:
Are there any angles that don't fit into the categories above?

All you need to do this is a benchmark angle paper. Take a regular sheet of white paper and fold it on the diagonal. All three of your benchmark angles are there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbR_rakilds

Please complete the angle sheets (pages 150 - 154). All you need is a benchmark angle paper.

Science
Today we talked about bird beak adaptations. The different types of beats are amazing! Which beak was like a hook.... pliers.... nutcracker....chisel?

To complete the worksheet, go onto the website below. You don't have to copy everything, just the most important idea (how the beak is used)

http://www.vtaide.com/png/bird-adaptations3.htm

Move the mouse/cursor over the bird and the information on each beak appears.

When you are doing the adaptations of one animal in your chosen habitat for your slide show, make sure the animal is in the middle of the slide and your are labeling structural and behavioral adaptations. Example:
Some of you are learning how to do some very clever animations and transitions.

Learning Skills
This week we are supposed to be practicing SELF-REGULATION. Some students are having difficulty with this learning skill, particularly during transitions. Remember to show good manners.
Reminders:
  • Off-uniform day tomorrow
  • Halloween Family Dance tomorrow evening

Tuesday 24 October 2017

Literacy
Today we wrote our anchor answer for main idea using "Mr. Bear and the Bear". All groups had a great message...... respecting others and nature....... not judging a book by its cover..... are both words of wisdom to live by. When you are asked to write the main idea using "Shin-chi's Canoe", make sure you follow the same format.

Nutshell                        +                        Message                 +                   Proof

Animated Good Idea Clipart

Math
We began our Geometry unit today. We learned the different types of angles, how to construct angles and compare them to benchmark angles. Our benchmark angles are a right angle, half a right angle and a straight angle. For grade five, you also need to know the types of angles, right, acute and obtuse. Everyone seemed to understand how to construct angles using a PROTRACTOR. We will keep practicing tomorrow. Make sure you construct the five angles in your notebook.

In the above protractor the arm of the angle is lined up with the 0 degrees on the INSIDE SCALE. The angle is acute, so you know it must be less than 90 degrees. the angle is between 30 and 40 degrees so it is 35 degrees.

Remember.....
Acute angles are between 0 degrees and 90 degrees, obtuse angles are between 90 degrees and 180 degrees. Make sure you use the correct scale on the protractor.

Identify the angles below as acute or obtuse. Then read the protractor to get the measurement.

Music video for review:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVuMULQjb3o

Religion
Today we read "The Captain's Faith". Tomorrow you will be put in groups and decide who will play which role in the play. We will divide the play into two scenes. Each group will be given a scene. What was the message of the play? Why did Peter have the dream of eating "unclean" food? What did Cornelius do at the end?

Science
We reviewed structural and behavioral adaptations and listed some examples of each. Please complete the questions at the bottom of the second page. Handsome little guy. Do a bit of research.
Here are a few desert animals. How have they adapted to living in the desert?

Reminders:
  • Library tomorrow
  • Bring gym clothes for Thursday
  • All money submitted for Halloween bowling!
  • Computer time to work on Power Point

Congratulations to all students who participated in the Fall Fun Fair. Your INITIATIVE did not go unnoticed!

Monday 23 October 2017

Literacy
Today we talked about a new reading strategy, Main Idea. Remember, to start with what the story is about in a "nutshell" (the first part of writing summary), think about the message the author or the character is trying to teach or tell you and finally find proof in the text to support that "big idea" or message.

Here is your anchor chart:

Share with a parent the story of "Mr. Bear and the Bear". We had some a variety of messages. A good story will have more than one message, as long as you can support it with proof from the story. Tomorrow we will formulate a good answer to use as a model.

Review your reading test with a parent. Write your next steps in your assessment duo-tang.

Cut out your words and practice your sort. You may keep the words from last week or recycle them.

Math
We played a few games today. Make sure you're using a strategy to find the 45 or 32 term of a pattern.
For growing patterns:

Example: What is the 43rd term with this pattern rule, start at 17 add 8 each time. If you add 8 ten times, you would be adding 80. 17 + 80 = 97. So the tenth term would be 97. The 20th term would be 97 + 80 = 177, the 30th term 177 + 80 = 257, the 40th term would be 257 + 80 = 337 . The 43rd term would be 337 + 8 + 8 + 8 = 361

For a repeating pattern:

Example: Find the 29th term in this repeating pattern, 3, 5, 8, 2, 3, 5, 8, 2. Every fourth number will be 2. so the 4th, 8th, 12th, 16th, 20th, 24th, 28th term will be 2 so the 29th term will be the next number in the repeating pattern which is 3.

Please review your math test with a parent. Write your next step in your assessment duo-tang.

We also did a very short number talk. You should be using mental math strategies to add two 2-digit numbers together. Our strategies include:
  • Making magic tens (give and take)
  • Adding place values
  • Doubles or near doubles
  • Adding in chunks
Keep practicing!

Learning Skills
Self-Regulation was the learning skill we are focusing on this week. Self-control is only one part of self-regulation. Setting goals and asking questions are very important as well. Make sure you've set a smart goal for the week:
Here's the link to the Cookie Monster Video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PnbKL3wuH4

Science
Today we talked a little about adaptations. My apologies for uploading the wrong handout. Hopefully you kept your card in a safe place. Which creature has a second membrane over its eyes....
Remember there are two kinds of ADAPTATIONS, structural and behavioral. What is the difference between them? Can you give two examples of each?
Many of you saved your power point on a memory stick. You still have a few more periods to work on it at school. Next period I will teach you some nifty animations.

Reminders:
Blue information form
Fall Fun Fair tomorrow..... bring in your creations in the morning!

Sunday 22 October 2017

Happy Sunday..... what a glorious autumn day!

A very productive Friday! Most students completed

  • a math test
  • spelling test
  • good copies of stretchy sentences
  • spider art
  • reading test

Drama
We had lots of fun presenting tableaus on Friday. Check out the photos when you come into the classroom on Monday. Some terrific facial expressions.

Science
We had a bit of time to work on our Power Point presentations. If you'd like to work on your Power Point at home, bring a memory stick. Remember, you can access your files at home if you go through your e-mail (studentnumber@ldcsb.org)
Success Criteria:
Food Web Assignment / Oral Presentation
Slide 1 - Photograph of habitat
Slide 2 - Map showing location of habitat
Slide 3 - Food Web
- Identify living things as producers or consumers (herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, scavenger, decomposer)
Slide 4 - 1 FOOD CHAIN in web
Slide 5 - Adaptations of one living thing in food web
Slide 6... - Any other interesting facts.

The slide show will have PHOTOGRAPHS with only a title on each page. You will give the information as you speak to the class. You may write out a "script" to help you learn the information part of your presentation.

We will be studying adaptations this week. You will have at least 4 more periods at school to work on your slide show. We will be learning about adding animations next week.  The due date is November 3rd.

This slide show will assess Media, Science and Oral Communication.

Word Study
12 students completed their practice activities and 12 students did not. You must complete the practice each evening. The BLIND SORT is the most important practice.

Reminders:
  • Fall Fun Fair this week if you'd like to participate.
  • Only two students left to submit Halloween bowling permission form and money.
  • Access all the wonderful sites on VLE using your e-mail address (see above). Go to the Board website (LDCSB) and scroll down to the bottom and click VLE. Type in your e-mail address. Your password is the password you use at school to get into the computer. You may have to do the e-mail twice.
  • PLEASE RETURN BLUE INFORMATION FORM WITH ANY CHANGES ON MONDAY!

Thursday 19 October 2017

Math
Phew.... math test done!
Tomorrow we will be playing the math games that were part of the patterning unit.
Literacy
Study your words and SPELLING PATTERNS for tomorrow. BRING BACK YOUR RED OR PURPLE DUO-TANG WITH YOUR BLUE NOTEBOOK.
Spelling Test Clipart
Practice reading "Footprint" and write the most important events on the sticky notes to help with your summary. A test will follow after group reading.

Science
Today we started our food webs on the computer. We will continue working on them tomorrow. If you do not know the different types of producers and consumers in your chosen habitat, find out so you can get going on your Power Point.

Physical Education
Lots of fun playing "Bench Ball" today. We have some great volleyball players in the class.
Please make sure you have your gym clothes at school on TUESDAYS and THURSDAYS. Keep them in a bag in your cubby.

Reminders:
Three students have yet to remit permission forms and money for Halloween bowling.
Fall Fun Fair next Tuesday.

Wednesday 18 October 2017

Literacy
We will review the most important events in the story "Trick or Treat". Still some difficulty deciding on the most important ideas and making the summary flow with transition words.

Practice your words. Do your blind sort tonight.

Math
Everyone breezed through the math lesson today. Patterning test tomorrow. Make sure you look questions you did incorrectly and redo them. Use the pink pages a guides and lessons from Nelson Math. Lots of review questions were posted last night, so review yesterday's post.

Science
Everyone worked INDEPENDENTLY to get a good start on their food webs. If you have some time, look up producers, herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, scavengers and decomposers in your chosen habitat. Narrow your focus for your food web e.g. not just "rainforest" Amazon Rainforest, not just grasslands, the African Savanna.

Learning Skills
Today we talked about INDEPENDENT WORK. This learning skills includes:

  • Using feedback to improve work
  • Staying focused
  • Not being distracted by people or objects
  • Remaining on task WITHOUT teacher supervision
  • Following instructions
  • Knowing what do do when you finish your work

Tuesday 17 October 2017

Martin!

Literacy
We continued to summarize "The Halloween Kid". We are just finishing inserting our transition words. Tomorrow you will practice summarizing out loud with your group once we have decided on the important events. No reading groups tomorrow. We will focus on math review at home and have reading groups on Friday.

It's hard to be a supply teacher...... so many things to remember. It has come to my attention that you were told to hand in your Word Work duo-tang yesterday. We're back on track today. For homework, you should be completing words in alphabetical order, speed sorting (no written work) and red consonants, blue vowels. The exercises are expected to be as neat and tidy as the first week. Remember, don't memorize the words, learn the spelling patterns. Different letter combinations make different sounds and words change sometimes when endings are added.

Science
Today we looked more closely at food chains. What do food chains normally begin with? What happens in a food chain? How do scavengers affect food chains? Make sure you finish your three food chains for tomorrow. Use the pictures in your textbook. Use each living thing only once.
Review the video. What is the difference between a food chain and a food web?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZhE2p46vJk
Think of all the living things in the St. Nicholas habitat. Make a list in your agenda. We will make a food web including all the living things (well maybe not all of them). Is there a particular habitat in the world that you'd like to use to construct a food web? Make a list of all the living things. It will be your assignment next time we are on computers.

Physical Education
You must have appropriate gym clothes to participate in PE class. Many students were missing shirts or shorts or both. You cannot wear your uniform for PE.

Math
Give the bread tag question to a parent, but instead of a bread tag use a penny. Complete your questions from MathUP carefully. Some require a little thinking.

Test on Thursday
Grade 4:

  • Describe how REPEATING, GROWING AND SHRINKING shape and number patterns continue and be able to create your own repeating, growing and shrinking patterns.
  • Includes growing / shrinking by the same amount and different amounts
  • Identify the core of repeating patterns.
  • Describing a pattern means writing the pattern rule (Start at _____, ____ each time)
  • Describe how the attributes of a shape patterns repeat
  • Follow pattern rules and make predictions based on pattern rules
  • Measurement patterns
  • Organize patterns using a t-chart or table

The pink pages in your MathUP are perfect for review.

Grade 5:

  • All of the above
  • Growing and shrinking shape patterns
  • Measurement patterns including recipes
  • Given a number pattern, express it as a shape pattern that grows in the same way
REVIEW QUESTIONS FOR BOTH GRADES:

  1. Describe the pattern in the pattern train above and predict what block will be in the 30thposition.
  2. Create a repeating pattern using pattern blocks. Describe your pattern and predict what block will be in the 30th place.

Reminders:
  • Permission forms and money for Halloween bowling.
  • Practice SORTING your words.

Monday 16 October 2017

Literacy
I don't think everyone understood how the word study program works. I popped into school and found the bins full of word study duo-tangs. You must take home the duo-tang on Monday and practice sorting and studying the words AT HOME. How can you study the spelling patterns if you didn't bring home the words? That being said, I took a look at the word sort tables in your notebook. They do not look like week 1. The expectations are:
  • Neat and organized printing
  • Date and title on top line underlined in red with a ruler
  • Spelling sort rules at the top of the table
  • Table drawn in pencil using a ruler
  • Words printed neatly under the correct headings skipping lines

Memorizing how to spell the words is not the purpose of the program. You must learn the spelling patterns. We will go over this tomorrow. I know it is tricky when there is a supply teacher. Fear not. It is only week 2 :)

Math
Once again, expectations were not followed. In the mornings there are directions of what to do on the Smart Board. Books are to be placed in bins when you have homework, unless stated otherwise. I went to pick up homework and found only 16 books out of 25 in the correct bin. I cannot give you feedback on what you know or don't know if you don't hand in your book. Book 1 comes in and you work in Book 2. It really isn't that complicated:)

Computers
I hope you were able to do the activities on the carousel. Tomorrow I will ask if you had any difficulties. You can access the carousel at home. Go to the Board website and scroll down to the bottom. Find MyLDCSB and click it on. Log in using your e-mail address which is just your student number that you use to login at school followed @ldcsb.org. It will be under Desire to Learn icon.
Example: 83561@ldcsb.org

Science
I didn't understand what the supply teacher did with you for Science so tomorrow we will continue with food chains.

Reminders:
  • Halloween bowling permission form and money (six students are outstanding)
  • Pattern Test on Thursday (tomorrow we will talk about the kinds of questions)

Sunday 15 October 2017

Literacy
Congratulations to everyone who successfully learned the spelling of the assigned spelling words. I like how most people used the long a spelling patterns (consonant ai consonant / consonant a silent e) to spelling the new words. You may have chosen the wrong spelling pattern, but at least your are using an appropriate strategy to spell unknown words.

This week different groups will be given different words. You will do exactly the same practice exercises in your notebook at home. The first sort you will do with the supply teacher tomorrow. I love the level of ORGANIZATION in your notebooks. Keep it up!

Math
Try question #2 from the handout in your notebook.

A different food bank has about $4200 left in its bank account after one year. Create a pattern rule to describe this pattern. What amount might the food bank have started with? What amount might it take out every week?

Choose an amount to withdraw each week. Choosing multiples of 10 or 5, make the calculations easier. Remember there are 52 weeks in a year. Multiply to get the total amount withdrawn then ADD that amount to the amount left to get the starting amount. Write the PATTERN RULE:

Start with $ __________ and withdraw $________ each week.

Art
The spider webs are looking very spooky and creative. Remember to use different types of lines when creating your pattern in each section.

Science
So far living things are classified as producers and consumers. Producers (plants) make their own food in a process called PHOTOSYNTHESIS.

Consumers must eat to get the nutrients they need for energy to survive. Types of consumers:
  • Herbivores
  • Carnivores
  • Omnivores
  • Decomposers
What would happen in there were no decomposers? What do decomposers do?

What conclusions can you make from the flow chart above? The arrow points in the direction where energy is given.

Reminders:
  • Permission form and money for Halloween bowling.

Happy Sixth Week of Summer! So far we have looked at the chance something could happen in terms of words (e.g. likely, impossible, unlik...
