Math
Everyone did a wonderful job completing the "Action Task" with your group today. Mrs. Nathoo was very impressed with your collaboration skills. Everyone was on-task and thinking. The second part of the task used a problem strategy that we have not used before, WORKING BACKWARDS. If you know the change that you get back from $100, you work backwards to get the total cost of three items, then use mental math to find a combination of three numbers that add to the total cost.

For example:
If you got $16 change from $100, the total cost would be $100 - $16. Time for a mental math strategy!
Some students subtracting back in chunks.
$100 - $10 - $6 = $84
Some students adding up to the total cost.
$16 + ___ = 100
$16 + $4 = $20
$20 + $80 = $100 , so the total cost is $80 + $4 = $84

Next you have to figure out a combination of three numbers that add to $84.

Some students used guess and test using the money. Some students made magic tens.

38 + 32 = 70 so the last item must be $14

Please complete practice exercises in your MathUP duotang.
Practice counting money after playing the game.
Take a good look at the symbols, people and places on the different bills. Do you know who or what they are and why they are on a Canadian bill?

Literacy
Tomorrow you will be given a copy of your "script" to practice. Try to memorize your part. If you have difficulty memorizing it, at least practice until you can read the words so they sound like two people having a conversation.

Olympics
As our unit on the Olympics draws to  an end, we will be completing several writing and math assignments based on the information you collected. Keep working hard. Canada's medal count keeps going up!

Reminders:

  • Off-uniform tomorrow
  • Elapsed time test on Tuesday.
