Literacy
Today we began our Word Study program. Please have a parent sign the letter in your Word Study notebook. Practice sorting your words. We will do all the written work for this first week together at school. DO NOT FORGET YOUR DUO-TANG AT HOME. Study your words by learning the letter / sound patterns.

Make sure you practice reading your book for tomorrow. You should have gotten a chance to write the summary sticky notes during the last period of the day. Our focus questions for the test will again be characteristics of a narrative and summarizing.

Math
Today we looked at number patterns in t-charts. A few tips for tonight's homework:

Grade 4:
5. Look at the 2nd column of each t-chart in Question 4.
Write the pattern rule for each t-chart.
Correct way to write pattern rules:

Start at ...... add...... each time

6.  How old are you in months? Show your work.

Set up your t-chart
Each year is 12 months, but what happens if you're older than 8 or 9 years old? How many months will you add to the number in your t-chart to ANSWER THE QUESTION?

Grade 5:
6.  11 to 15 players and 2 coaches are needed to make a soccer team.

a) Make and extend a table to show the number of coaches and the least and greatest number of players needed for one to five teams.

Number of Teams
Minimum Players
Maximum Players
Coaches
1
11
15
2
2
22
30
4
Continue the table

b) 62 students want to play. How many teams can be made? How many coaches are needed? How many players will be on each team?

You need to think about this question. What combinations of 11 to 15 players will add to 62? There are many possibilities....

Example:

You could have 3 teams of 12 which is 36 players and 2 teams of 13 which is 26.
36 + 26 = 62 That's 5 teams so you'd need 10 coaches.

Find another combination.

Author Visit
What a wonderful visit we had with Michael Wade. What was the message of his talk? Share with your parents the average number of times he has to rewrite his stories. I'm looking forward to seeing my name in print soon......I'll never shave my armpits again.
