Tomorrow we will finish writing the summary of "Max" using your sticky notes. Some groups are still not practising all the reading skills. Don't skip steps.
Math
Both grades talked about growing or increasing patterns. There are many ways to solve the problems including:
- extending the t-chart (very long, but it works)
- using a hundred chart (more accurate)
- using the repeating feature on a calculator
- looking at patterns
Let's look at similar problem.....
Mrs. Hollis' class trains for cross country. On the first day they ran 16 laps around the gym without stopping. Each day they ran 2 laps more than the day before.
a) On what day will they run 40 laps?
For this question, set up a t-chart and extend it

b) What is the pattern rule?
To make a pattern rule specific to a number pattern, you must write it in this format:
Start at 16, add 2 each time
c) How many laps will they run on day 50?
You could extend the t-chart. That's a lot of work, but you will get the correct answer provided you don't make a mistake.
Every 10 days they run 20 laps more (10 days x 2 laps)
Every 20 days they run 40 laps more (20 days x 2 laps)
Every 30 days they run 60 laps more (30 days x 2 laps)
Every 40 days they run 80 laps more (40 days x 2 laps)
If at day 10 the class is at 34 laps, then 40 days later (Day 50) they should be at 34 + 80 = 114 laps
d) How many laps will the class run after 100 days?
Use the same reasoning....
Day 100 is 90 days after day 10, so the class will have run 90days x 2 laps = 180 laps
180 laps + 34 laps = 114 laps
Look at the number pattern...
16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, 34 10 days
36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, 48, 50, 52, 54 20 days
56, 58, 60, 62, 64, 66, 68, 70, 72, 74 30 days
You can see you are adding 20 more.
Try this one on your own..... (set up a t-chart to help you see the pattern)
Start at 2 add 4 each time
a) What is the 10th term in this pattern? Set up a t-chart.
