Olympics
The torch has been extinguished and the winter games are over. We have had lots of fun following the Olympics over the past two weeks. We will wrap up our unit this week. You will have until the end of the week to complete your scrapbook. Tomorrow you will begin your paragraph on a Canadian athlete. Next will be a news article about your chosen country. Last we will do some graphing using the medal counts in different countries.

Do you know who carried the flag for Canada at the closing ceremonies?
Do you know where and when the next winter Olympics will take place?
What were the top three moments of the Olympics for you? Why?

Grade 4 and 5 Sample Time Test Questions
·         What time is it?
·         How would you say the time?
The strategy we used the most was a number line. You can also use subtraction (make sure you change to 24-hour clock and regroup 1 hour as 60 minutes) or an actual clock.

Find end time knowing start and elapsed time.
What time will it be 25 minutes after 3:15 p.m.?
·        What time will it be 1 hour 13 minutes after 4:55 p.m.?
·        What time will it be 8 hours 30 minutes after 10:45 a.m.?

Find elapsed time knowing start and end time.
·         About how much time has passed between 3:20 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. the same day?
·         About how much time has passed between 10:25 a.m. and 6:13 p.m. the same day?

Longer units of time:
·         How many years in 2 centuries?
·         How many years in 3 decades?
·         How many decades in 4 centuries?
·         How many years in 2 millenniums / millennia?
·         How many years in 1 century and 6 decades?

When do you think a digital clock is more helpful than an analogue clock (clock with fact and hands)?

Would you use the same strategy to calculate the amount of time between 7:35 a.m. and 2:12 p.m. as you would to calculate the amount of time between 7:35 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.? Explain.
