Science
On Friday we talked about CHEMICAL changes. What are some signs of a chemical change?
explosion
light
heat
new substance
gas
colour change
combustion (burning)

Chemical changes are irreversible. You cannot get the original material back.

Examples of Chemical Changes
  • Burning wood
  • Souring milk
  • Mixing acid and base
  • Digesting food
  • Cooking an egg
  • Heating sugar to form carame.
  • Baking a cake
  • Rusting of iron
On Monday we will be observing a chemical change involving the reaction of baking soda and vinegar.

We also touched on THE LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MASS.
Be prepared to complete your investigation Monday morning.

Math
Grade 4 Test #1
DIFFERENT MEANINGS OF MULTIPLICATION: Example 7 x 3 = 21

Equal Groups:

Repeated Addition:

7 + 7 + 7 = 21            or         3 + 3 +  3 +3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 21

Skip Counting:

7, 14, 21

3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21

Array:

XXXXXXX            XXX
XXXXXXX            XXX
XXXXXXX            XXX
                                XXX
                                XXX
                                XXX
                                XXX

Word Problem:
Mr. Morson bought 3 packages of gum. Each package had 7 sticks of gum. How many sticks of gum did he buy?

FAMILY OF FACTS: Example 3, 7, 21

3 x 7 = 21
7 x 3 = 21
21÷ 3 = 7
21÷ 7 = 3

RELATING MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION FACTS:
Example: How can you use 6 x 4 = 24 to find 6 x 8?

6 x 4 is 4 groups of 6, so 8 groups of 6 is double 4 groups of 6
6 x 8 = 24 + 24 = 48

Example: How can you use 36 ÷ 6 = 6 to find 36 ÷ 3?
36 ÷ 6 is dividing 36 into 6 equal groups, 36 ÷ 3 is dividing 36 into 3 equal groups so there should be twice as many in each group.
36 ÷ 3 = 6 + 6 = 12

SOLVING PROBLEMS:
·         There are 27 students. There are 3 students in each group. How many groups are there altogether?
·         There are 6 eggs in 1 carton. How many eggs are in 3 cartons?
·         Chad bought 2 books at a yard sale. His brother, Sam, bought 3 times as many books. How many books did Sam buy?
·        Colin has 24 markers. Andrea has 6 markers. How many times as many markers does Colin have than Andrea?
·        Micha also earns $7 a week doing chores. She earned $63 altogether doing chores. For how many weeks did she do chores?
·        Create a division word problem using 63, 9
·        Create a multiplication word problem using 6, 7

 Grade 5 Test #1

RELATING MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION FACTS:
Example: How can you use 6 x 40 = 240 to find 6 x 80?

6 x 40 is 40 groups of 6, so 80 groups of 6 is double 40 groups of 6
6 x 80 = 240 + 240 = 480

Example: How can you use 360 ÷ 6 = 60 to find 360 ÷ 3?
360 ÷ 6 is dividing 360 into 6 equal groups, 360 ÷ 3 is dividing 360 into 3 equal groups so there should be twice as many in each group.
360 ÷ 3 = 60 + 60 = 120

2 DIGIT / 3-DIGIT BY 1-DIGIT MULTIPLICATION:
Example: 543 x 6 (Expanded form and algorithm)
Example: 67 x 8

SOLVING MULTIPLICATION PROBLEMS:
Ava bought 5 boxes of 62 pens and Luca bought 6 boxes of 53 pens. Who bought more pens? How many more?

Create a word problem using 512 x 9

Use 17 x 9 to finish each word problem
A rectangle has….
Each soccer team has ….

ESTIMATING PRODUCTS AND QUOTIENTS:
There are 72 pens in a box. About how many pens in 8 boxes?
There are 351 erasers for 6 classes. About how many erasers are there for each class?

MULTIPLYING / DIVIDING BY MULTIPLES OF 10 AND 100
400 X 7 =
630  ÷ 9 =
