Today we reviewed our before and during reading strategies:
- Set a purpose
- Predict
- Activate your schema
- Check for understanding
We also reviewed the characteristics of a narrative:
- Setting
- Characters
- Plot - Beginning - Middle - End
(Problem) (Resolution)
These characteristics become very important when we SUMMARIZE. What is a summary?
A summary is a short recount of the MOST IMPORTANT parts of a story IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Good summaries include all the characteristics of a narrative. Remember:
We summarize as we read when we check for understanding. Today we read "The Frog Chef" a fractured fairy tale. Choosing the most important word or words on a page helps us pick out only the most important details. If it is not related to the character solving the problem, it usually is not important. Tomorrow you will write the most important idea of each page in the story on a stick note. Putting on the sticky notes together, should result in a good summary.
We start a summary with a general statement of the characters, setting and problem in the story. For example, in our story today....
"The Frog Chef" is about a chef, Kobe King, of a restaurant in San Francisco. People in the city don't like the food in his restaurant anymore.
Math
Most of you understood how to find the __ term of a repeating pattern.
Remember:
The core is the part of the pattern that repeats
The terms are the numbers or shapes in a pattern.
Knowing the number of terms in the core helps us predict the __ term. Using a 100s chart was a big help for a lot of you today. You need only do up to # 4 in your yellow math notebook from your MathUP duo-tank. Please review the pink pages with a parent. All the important ideas in today's lesson are on those pages.
Play the game tonight with a parent. The instructions are below and everyone was given a set of dice.
I will try to correct the type of questions on "Prodigy".
Science
Many students did not complete their interdependence relationships in their chosen habitat at St. Nicholas. Homework is your RESPONSIBILITY.
Good start on your group comparing and contrasting paragraph. I loved the way you shared the writing on the large white boards. Go teams! Remember to use those signal or connecting words. We should finish tomorrow. Then it's onto ADAPTATIONS.
