Literacy
Where there any good luck charms that you didn't know about?

Today we talked about the features of newspaper articles. As soon as you are finished your athlete biography, you should begin working on your article. The topic of your article is the performance of your country. The first thing you must decide, is the two areas for the body of your article. It can be an event or athlete or team or a day. You must have details for your paragraph. For example, in my article I listed the athletes that won all the medals in figure skating for Canada and commented on their performances. Remember the "voice" of a news article. You can SENSATIONALIZE the performance by adding descriptive language. I didn't just write Scott and Tessa beat the French ice dancing team and won the gold. Instead....

Their passionate and technically flawless free-skate performance to "Moulin Rouge" electrified both the judges and the world and earned them their third Olympic gold medal.

Winter Olympic Newspaper Article

Learning Goal:

We are learning to write NEWS ARTICLES with the correct FEATURES and appropriate VOICE so that we can give information about the PERFORMANCE of a country at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.

Success Criteria:

I can write a HEADLINE that grabs the reader’s attention and answers the questions who and what.

I can write a BYLINE that identifies the writer and the newspaper.

I can write a LEAD paragraph (few sentences) that answers who, what, where, when and makes the reader want to read more. (HOOK)

I can write a two paragraphed BODY that includes more DETAILS of what happened and answers the questions HOW and WHY.

I can include direct QUOTES from people directly affected by the event to add interest.

I can use the correct VOICE and DESCRIPTIVE LANGUAGE to SENSATIONALIZE my article (make it sound exciting and important).

I can write an ENDING paragraph that leaves the reader with something to remember or think about.

I can write COMPLETE SENTENCES that are clear and easy to understand.

I can use correct SPELLING, CAPITALIZATION and PUNCTUATION.

Math
Solving and writing addition and subtraction problems was the goal today. We used a specific strategy to find the population of the two cities. First we broke the population in half and moved people from one city to another to make the difference between the numbers 1110.

Try making your own problem.... it can be about books in a library, cost of electronic items or anything that would be a 4-digit number. Solve the problem using the same strategy. Don't forget to estimate first!

Science
What is the definition of matter?
What are the states of matter?
What are the properties of solids, liquids and gases?
What is all matter made up of?
How are the atoms in the different states different?

Take a look at the diagram below. How are the molecules different?
