Literacy
Words were given today. We will have the test on Monday. You will have enough time to finish your practice exercises at home and school. Sometimes the "ur" sounds more like "er". They are tricky.

Today we were invited to the gym to listen to the intermediate speeches on "optimism". What kind of person is optimistic? What is the opposite of optimistic? I hope you apply their powerful messages in your life every day!

Reading groups are on Friday. Make sure you identify the features of non-fiction and can explain the purpose of each.

Science
Make sure you complete your conclusions to your absorbency investigation. Remember the factors that you should consider before making your recommendation:

  • Absorbency
  • Cost
  • Environment
  • Health
Another factor that we didn't think of was CONVENIENCE. Is it easier to keep washing a cloth over and over or just tearing off a new one every time you need it?

Most groups have completed the design of their insulating device. Some student may need to do a little research about the reason why certain materials are good insulators. Two groups stayed in for 15 minutes at lunch and used the IPads to find the properties of good insulators. BRAVO!

We will be building our insulating devices tomorrow, so please bring in any other materials that your group needs.

Division vocabulary:

The DIVIDEND  is the amount you are dividing (biggest number). The divisor is what you are dividing by and the quotient is the answer to a division question.

We talked about different kinds of division problems. You can have sharing problems and grouping problems. In a sharing problem you know the number of groups and the total amount you are sharing. Sharing example:
You have 18 cookies to share with 9 friends. How many cookies will each friend get?

In a grouping problem, you know the number in each group and the total number, but you don't know the number of groups.
Grouping example:
You have 18 cookies and you want to give each friend 2 cookies. How many friends can you share with?

We reviewed 3-digit multiplication. Remember when it asks to show the multiplication a different way (not the algorithm), just show it using expanded form. Don't worry about drawing blocks, unless you understand how to do it. It is explained on the yellow pages. We didn't have time to go through that strategy.
