Thank goodness most students found their lost data! We will continue to survey other classes. Remember to have your interesting survey question ready.

Multiplication and Division Test # 1 tomorrow

Grade 4 sample word  problems:
Nathan has 7 nickels and 9 dimes in his pocket. How much money does he have. Use multiplication sentences to find the answer.

You are planting 24 flowers in equal rows. What are all the ways you can plant the flowers? Draw the different arrays. Hint: think of all the numbers that multiply to 24. Do not worry about 24 x 1 or 1 x 24.

Show the meaning of 12 ÷ 3 two different ways.
XXXX            XXXX             XXXX (3 groups of 4)
12 - 3 -3 -3 -3 = 0 (repeated subtraction)

Carter has 25 hockey cards. He is organizing them into equal rows of 7. How many more hockey cards does he need to make 6 rows of 7 cards? Explain using an array.

Erika went to the dog park with her dog. She counted 12 people and dogs (dogs + people = 12) and 34 legs altogether. How many people and dogs were at the park? Hint: Draw a chart and use guess and test.

People
Dogs
Dogs + People
Dog legs
People legs
Total legs
6
6
12
6 x 4 = 24
6 x 2 = 12
24 + 12 = 36

That's too many legs so try another combinations of people and dogs that add to 12.

Grade 5 sample problems:

Mrs. Smiley ordered 621 rulers for the school next year for 9 classrooms. About how many rulers for each class? Think about your 9 times table.  Choose a dividend that divides by 9 evenly and easily.
9 x 7 = 63 so 630 rulers  ÷ 9 classes = 70 rulers for each class

What is the area of a rectangle with the length of 25 cm and a width of 8 cm?

Genevieve has 108 books. She has 9 times as many as Violet. How many books does Violet have?

Leo has 256 Lego pieces. Will has 3 times as many. How many Lego pieces does Will have?

Write a word problem using 369 x 6

Ava saved enough money to buy 8 volleyballs for $25 each. The price increased to $32. How many can she buy now?

How many $20 books can Jameson buy with $220?

Religion
On Sunday we celebrated the birthday of the Church - Pentecost. On this day the disciples of Christ received the Holy Spirit which gave them the courage to spread the good news of Jesus Christ to people of ALL nations. That's why they could speak in different languages.

Social Studies
In grade four we continued our discussion of the physical features in Ancient Rome and Judea. Tomorrow we will think about advantages and disadvantages of different physical features and look at precipitation maps. Why was the amount of precipitation important to early societies?

In grade five we discussed the ways that the First Nations peoples used the environment. Some First Nations peoples were hunters and gatherers, moving frequently. Others built more permanent shelters and farmed. You will be completing your chart comparing food today and food in the First Nations communities tomorrow.

Once again each grade level worked very respectfully during lessons. VERY IMPRESSIVE!

Health
Today the grade fours began talking about smoking. We touched on the different reasons young people start smoking. Do you remember the four reasons? We also talked about the effects of second hand smoke. Next class we will talk about the different long term and short term effects of smoking.
The video below shows the short term effects. Skip the ending about getting help to stop smoking.
