Math
A few students need to finish up their math tests from today. Tomorrow your test will be primarily skills.
Grade 5:
LONG DIVISION

  • Find the quotient 3-digit dividends / 1-digit divisor with and without remainders using standard algorithm and/or repeated subtraction

Examples:
674 ÷ 8

ESTIMATING PRODUCTS AND QUOTIENTS (High and Low Strategy)
Estimate 569 x 5 
500 x 5 = 2500
600 x 5 = 3000
569 is closer to 600 so the product is closer to 3000. I estimate it to be about 2700

Estimate 695 ÷ 9
Think of your 9 times table.
630 ÷ 9 = 70
720 ÷ 9 = 80
695 is closer to 720 so I estimate the quotient to be 77

MULTIPLICATION
Find the product 3-digit by 1-digit, 2 digit by 2 digit using standard algorithm AND area model.

Area Model: 31 x 24

Add 600 + 120 + 20 + 4 = 744

Standard Algorithm:

WRITING WORD PROBLEMS:

Write a word problem using 729 ÷ 9

Grade 4:

MULTIPLYING BY 10, 100 AND 100 
3 x 800 = 2400

DIVIDING BY 10 AND 100
5600 ÷ 10 = 560

A number is divided by 10. The quotient (answer) is between 30 and 40. What could the number be? Explain how you know.

ESTIMATING PRODUCTS 2-DIGIT BY 1-DIGIT (HIGH / LOW STRATEGY )
67 x 8 is between 60 x 8 = 480 and 70 x 8 = 560
Since 67 is closer to 70 I estimate it to be about 540

MULTIPLYING 2-DIGIT BY 1 DIGIT (Expanded form or standard algorithm)

DIVIDING 2-DIGIT BY 1-DIGIT NUMBER (Repeated subtraction /standard algorithm / splitting strategy)
Splitting:
96 ÷ 6
96 ÷ 6 = 60 ÷ 6 + 36 ÷ 6 = 10 + 6 = 16

Repeated subtraction:

   60 10 (10 x 6)              10 + 5 + 1 = 16
   36   
   30   5 (5 x 6)
     6
     6    1 (1 x 6)
     0

Standard Algorithm:

WRITING WORD PROBLEMS:
Write a word problem using 98 ÷ 7
