Social Studies
One of the important expectation in both the grade 4 and grade 5 Social Studies units (Early Societies and First Nations People) is comparing and contrasting. Today in grade four we wrote a paragraph comparing the physical features in Ancient Rome and Judea. When we write non-fiction informational texts, we write in clear and concise sentences. We stick to the facts. We wrote about similar features such as mountains and rivers and different physical features such as deserts and salt flats. You will use the writing today as a model in the upcoming weeks to compare and contrast a topic we discuss in class and covered in your textbook.

We also began our discussion on the different natural resources in Ancient Rome and Judea.
We will look at differences in farming and an incredible technology Ancient Romans used to transport water. Do you know the name of the structure below?

In grade 5 we learned about he roles of the different people in a First Nations community. How were First Nations communities organized? How does that differ from your community? Your first assignment will be to construct a mind map showing the responsibilities of the elders, men, women and children.

Math
All groups have surveyed another class. Tomorrow we will set up charts and do a gallery walk to quickly survey our own class.
Grade fives we talked about bar graphs with intervals. They are very similar to stem and leaf plots except they use intervals instead of stems and bars instead of the numbers. Make sure you complete your homework questions.

Mode and median with both grades tomorrow and mean with grade fives. We should be able to finish the unit this week.

Dance
Our dance is almost complete. We just need to think of a way to end with a BANG!

Health
Your first health assignment is to create a game show to present to the class that shows the short and long term effects of smoking / chewing tobacco (grade 4) and alcohol (grade 5) and the factors that affect alcohol intoxication. You may use a template on Smart Notebook. You are NOT creating a game board but a GAME SHOW. The first step is writing questions and answers related to your topic. You will be given the last period on Thursday to work on it again.

Reminders:
  • Material for volcano for Thursday. You must have a Gatorade-like bottle to build the volcano. You can use plastic, paper, a bit of modeling clay, toy dinosaurs and trees, tissue paper etc. Your volcano will only erupt once, so don't worry if the paper is ruined.
  • Genius hour materials for Friday. Tasks like painting you can complete at home. But if you are doing a model, you must put it together at school. If you'd like to stay after school, just let me know!
  • Mathletics assignments
  • Track and Field permission forms and money
  • School supplies for Uganda
  • Items for a "Book Lovers" basket
