Math

Today we talked about writing the date in numeric format. 

YEAR - MONTH - DATE

February 10, 2018 would be written 2018 - 02 - 10

There must be four digits in the year and two digits in the month and date.

Try these:

Your birthday, siblings birthday, mom or dad's birthday

When we write the time in numeric format, we use the 24-hour clock and add the seconds.

If Bob was born on June 1, 2003 at 15 minutes and 3 seconds after 4:00 pm, we write in numeric form:

2003 - 06 - 01    16:15: 03

There are many ways to express the date numerically. This is just one way.

Today we talked about the 24-hour clock. The difference between the 24-hour and 12- hour clock is no times is repeated so there is no am or pm written after the time. Here is a little chart to compare the times on the different clocks (we write the colon : between the hour and minute in both the 24-hour and 12-hour clock):

Social Studies

Great job coming up with a variety of reasons why people move FROM a region. Some students had difficulty identifying the natural resources in the physical regions we have studies. The information is in your notebook AND  in the textbook. Use the headings in the textbook to find the correct page in each chapter.

We continued working with time. We can find the elapsed time knowing the start and end time. We can find the end time knowing the start time and the elapsed time. Finally, we can find the start time knowing the end time and the elapsed time.

Joseph is driving to Kingston with his family. They leave at 6:15 am. It takes them 5 hours and 24 minutes. What time did they arrive in Kingston?

We can use a number line:

6 hours 15 minutes

5 hours 24 minutes

11 hours 39 minutes = 11:39 am

They will arrive at 11:39 am.

The Canadian Shield has 5 climate zones. Why? The explore and apply questions is opposite to the question we answered when we studied the Cordillera. Why do people MOVE AWAY from a region?

Everyone did a magnificent job sharing their habitat projects with the primary division. All the younger students enjoyed listening to the description of your animal and its habitat. Make sure your rubric is signed and returned.

Everyone has presented a routine on mats. The next assessment will be developing a routine on equipment. Remember to follow the rules during gym times and have your gym clothes at school.

Math
Today we began elapsed time, the amount of time that passes between one time and another or the amount of time it takes to complete an activity. The strategy that we used today was a counting up using a number line.

Nathan begins watching a movie at 6:47 pm and finished at 9:35 pm. How long was the movie?

Step 1: Draw a number line and label the start and end time.
Step 2: Count up to the nearest ten minutes.
Step 3: Count up to the nearest hour.
Step 4: Count up to the end time hour.
Step 5: Count up to the remaining minutes.
Step 6: Add all the times.

Each student is responsible for coming to school in the evening with a parent to share your successes and areas that need improvement. Each conference will be about half an hour in length. A letter will go home with your report card on Friday.

Social Studies

We ran out of time to do the talking chips properly. Please review the climographs on page 52. Practice making conclusions about the temperature and precipitation in the five cities. Remember the bars are precipitation and the scale is on the RIGHT. The line is temperature and the scale is on the LEFT. It doesn't make sense to have precipitation with negative numbers! The units are different as well. Precipitation is mm and temperature is degrees Celsius.

• Tomorrow we will showcasing our habitats for the younger students. Make sure you animal summary is done tomorrow.

We spent most of the day working on our Ted Harrison-styled masterpieces. Thank you for working so hard. Some are completed. One more week and they should be done.

Religion
The last of the plays were presented on Friday. Unfortunately, some actors were absent. You still have to present your part, so be prepared. The costumes were great!

Math
Our class is on fire with respect to Mathletics. Keep working hard. If you have problems with a particular assignment, please let me know. I try not to assign topics that we haven't already studied in class. Sometimes the preview doesn't give a full picture of all the types of questions. Be proud of your certificates!

Reminders:

• Practice telling time using link from previous post. We won't spend too much "time" telling time. Our focus will be elapsed time.
• Choose your Canadian Olympic athlete to follow. Make sure you know his/her sport.
