Today we finished our connection to "Where the Big Fish Are". Your connection should have three parts:
- the part of the text you are connecting with
- your connection
- explanation of your connection including your emotions
For example:
When I read, "Hey, it floats!" Bill hollers. He's so excited he does a little dance, it reminded me of when I tried to construct a Rube Goldberg device to show students. I tried to get the marble to travel from one place to another and it kept on stopping for flying out. Finally it worked and the marble ended up on the tee. I felt very proud of my determination and my ability to construct the device because I'm not a very handy person. So I imagine that's the way Bill felt, overjoyed that he accomplished what he set out to do, build a raft.
Please make sure you complete your word sorts tonight and puttthe words in alphabetical order. Be neat! Three students left their word study duo-tangs at school today....
If you haven't shared your Power Point with me, make sure you do so before Wednesday. On Wednesday we will practice presenting to a partner then we should be ready to go!
Math
We ran out of time at the end of the day to complete the math assignment. I have left an example for you at the back of the class. Many of you made a square which isn't really difficult to construct. Make sure you challenge yourself. You will finish with the supply teacher tomorrow. Instead of the next assignment, we will be working with Tangrams tomorrow.
Remembrance Day
Today we wrote postcards and mailed them to different veterans around London and abroad. Make sure you understand the correct letter format. Many of you did not understand how to ORGANIZE a letter. Look at the anchor chart below. You should know what the heading, greeting, body, closing and signature are on a letter.

Family Life
On Friday we talked about family love. In the story that we read together, Paul did something very wrong. What did he do? How did he feel about doing it? How did he make AMENDS (make things better)?
The message of the lesson is no matter what mistakes we make, those that truly love us, our parents, friends and God will not stop loving us. They may be disappointed and upset, but that does not mean that we have lost their love. We will always be welcome home.
Literacy
Make sure when you are reading with your group you are "elbow to elbow and knee to knee". That will help keep you engaged and focused on what you are reading. As I predicted, everyone did very well on the reading test. Fairy tales have different versions. Some of you when outlining the plot inserted the version that you were familiar with instead of the book. A very minor error.
Tomorrow we will formulate a good connection. In the story "Where the Big Fish Are", there were two great places to make a connections. PLEASE THINK ABOUT THESE FOR TOMORROW.
"Hey, it floats!" Bill hollers. HE'S SO EXCITED HE DOES A LITTLE DANCE.
"We just stand there and stare at our shattered raft. I FEEL LIKE A POPPED BALLOON.
Connecting to the emotions of the characters helps us understand how the character feels.
Art
Some lovely and creative landscape drawings. Remember we can show depth (distance) in a picture by OVERLAPPING the shapes and the POSITION on the page. Objects near the bottom appear CLOSER and LARGER. Objects at the top appear FURTHER AWAY (in the background).
Science
Most students finished their handout on the changes of a lake to a wetland to a coniferous forest to a deciduous forest. Tomorrow we will talk about how natural disasters change habitats.
Veterans' Week
This week we remember the valiant men and women who fought and continue to fight for our freedom and peace around the world.
Tomorrow you will write a postcard of appreciate to a Veteran or a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. In the postcard message you will include:
- your appreciation
- how you will remember their sacrifices and achievements
The postcards are anonymous and no personal information will be included.
You may send your postcard to the following places (we will pay for the cost):
- The postcard is intended for a Second World War or a Korean War Veteran:
- The postcard is intended for a Veteran who served after the Korean War:
- The postcard is intended for still serving Canadian Armed Forces members:
- "Any Canadian Armed Forces Member" for Canadians serving at home or overseas. This program is supervised by the Department of National Defence.
http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/remembrance/get-involved/postcard-for-peace
You can also send an e-card at home. This however requires personal information and you must ASK YOUR PARENTS.
Friday, November 6th was the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Passchendaele during World War I. On November 6th, 1917, the Canadians finally took the town of Passchendaele. 15,654 Canadians had fallen during these horrible battles. The British lost an estimated 275,000 casualties at Passchendaele to the German’s 220,000, making it one of the war’s most costly battles.

For grade five we were introduced to REGULAR POLYGONS. What is a regular polygon? What is a concave polygon? convex polygon?
Tomorrow we will finish reviewing angles. Make sure you finish your robot tonight. We will be having a test on angles NEXT WEEK.
Religion
How did you feel when you were EXCLUDED from not having homework today? The message of the play "The Captain's Faith" is important. When Peter realized what God was telling him, it set in motion events that eventually leaded to the Christian faith spreading all over Europe.

BRING YOUR SCRIPT TO PRACTICE WITH YOUR GROUP!
Science
It's remarkable how a habitat can change naturally over thousands of years. What were the steps that changed the lake habitat into a deciduous forest?
One of the problems of habitats changing, is that the habitat may not be suitable for the plants or animals. What could happen to those plants or animals?
Your Power Point is due tomorrow. Don't worry about putting animations on the slide with the food web. Early next week you will practice presenting to a partner. When everyone is ready, we will begin presentations next week. Order of presentations will be random.
Literacy
Make sure you practice reading your book. On each page write on "green" question about the plot. Your test tomorrow will have simple green questions to answer in COMPLETE SENTENCES USING PART OF THE QUESTION IN YOUR ANSWER. You will also have to identify the characteristics of a narrative and as always, there will be 10 multiple choice questions. I chose the book in honour of Halloween!

Science
Today we started our discussion on how habitats change. Some natural ways that habits change include:
Seasonal changes
Catastrophic changes (hurricanes, forest fires, mudslides etc.) Can you think of any others?
Over long periods of time
We began today with changes that occur over long periods of time. Tomorrow you will meet with all the other members that wrote the changes for one of the pictures on page 29. This is called jigsaw. After you will return to your group with more wonderful ideas and complete the handouts.
Math
We reviewed describing angles using our three benchmark angles. This concept was a little tricky for some of you. Please practice using your green benchmark angles to complete your homework in your yellow math notebook.
Students who would like extra support completing homework are welcome to stay in at lunch recess for 20 minutes.
Please make sure to get your homework signed.
Literacy
"What a Story" we read today! We talked about two reading strategies today:
We will review how to write a "good" connection tomorrow.
Some of you have to work on writing "green" knowledge-based questions. They begin with...who, what, where, when...
When you ask yourself these questions while you read, you are making sure you understand what is going on in the story.

Some amazing big ideas about the message of "Shin-chi's Canoe" including....
- Learn from the mistakes made in the past e.g. Residential Schools
- Respect the cultures of others even if they are different than your own
- All children should be treated with respect no matter what their culture
- Never forget your culture because it is an important part of who you are
WOW! Tomorrow you will finish the proof part of your answer.
No words this week with Halloween. We will have reading groups on Friday this week.
Math
Much better understanding of measuring and constructing angles. Keep practicing drawing different angles and measuring angles INSIDE of polygons. Tomorrow we will finish our angle creatures. Some extra practice for tonight:

Computers
Last in-class day to complete Power Point. If you are still not finished, you must stay in at lunch recesses.
Religion
Practice your parts for the play "The Captain's Faith". You will be presenting next week.
Science
Today we talked about a few more types of structural and behavioral adaptations:
- Mimicry
- Warning Coloration
- Learned Behavior
- Body Coverings
- Camouflage
- Migration
- Hibernation
- Social Behavior
Which picture show each of the above types of adaptations?

Reminders:
