Literacy
We will finish reading our Olympic book on Thursday. Quiz to follow. If you are on share a book for the week, PLEASE HAVE YOUR BOOK AT SCHOOL!

Math
Today we practiced estimating sums and differences. Remember the key words that tell you whether to add or subtract.
Image result for addition subtraction key words
Here is a review of rounding "rules" (rounding rap):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3afU6JQG15I

Remember as long as you can explain your reasoning, there are many possible estimates. For example, estimate the difference between 867 and 239.
You could estimate by rounding this way: 900 - 200 = 700 or
you could also estimate by rounding this way:  850 - 250 = 600
When you estimate you make friendly numbers (numbers that are easy to add or subtract in your head).

Gymnastics
We had a very entertaining afternoon watching gymnastics routines. Congratulations to all team members. Everyone performed magnificently. I will be with the team at the gymnastics meet tomorrow. You will be assigned to a class for most of the morning and part of the afternoon. Assignments to work on:
  • Bell work
  • Olympics scrapbook
  • Pop art
  • Social Studies mind map
  • Read quietly
Remember you are guests in another class. Ask the teacher if he or she needs any help if you do not understand a task you were given.

Reminders
  • Gymnastics team members please come to school with your green shirt ready to participate. You may wear sweatpants / sweatshirt etc. over top of your gym clothes. Don't forget your shorts / tights that your team is wearing.

Literacy
Some students have completed their biography of their Canadian Olympic athlete. Remember to follow the outline. Many athletes also have their own website. You can find interesting tidbits of information there as well as on the Canadian Olympic website.

Read your book on the Olympics several times or until you can read it fluently. Make sure you can identify the NON-FICTION text features on each page. You will have 10 multiple choice questions and a question on the features of non-fiction. I will ask you to identify and describe the feature and give an example from the book. Very similar to characteristics of a narrative.

Everyone was given their script to learn from "The One and Only Ivan". Please MEMORIZE your lines and be ready to present on Friday. Decide with your group what you will wear to present.

Share a book students DON'T FORGET!

Math
Everyone finished their time test today. I will have it back as soon as possible. You will also be taking out all your old tests out of your assessment folder to make room for new assignments and test in term 2.

Please practice your mental math strategies playing the game this evening. You can also practice counting money and making change.

Olympics
Your scrapbook should be finished at the end of the week. Tomorrow we will detour from adding and subtracting and talk a bit about double bar graphs. You will be constructing a double bar graph comparing Canada to your country with respect to medals (gold, silver, bronze) and compare Canadian men and women in specific events.

Reminders:

  • Gymnastics presentation tomorrow in the gym at 1:00 pm. All parents are welcome.
  • Gymnastics meet on Thursday at Carling Heights.

Literacy
Today we discussed the prefix "dis". When "dis" is added to the beginning of a word, it changes it to the opposite meaning of the a base word. For example, appear means to make known or see but disappear means to vanish.

We also began writing our Olympian biographies using Google Docs. Make sure you share your document with me and click "comments" so I can give you feedback. If you are still missing information about your athlete you must complete the research before writing your biography. Remember....
Paragraph 1

  • Lead sentence (grabs reader's attention)
  • Background information (including family)
  • Early life

Paragraph 2

  • Accomplishments

Paragraph 3

  • Interesting facts
  • Closing sentence
Math
In math we continued using our mental math strategies to add and subtract. Tomorrow you have a test on time. PLEASE REVIEW USING QUESTIONS POSTED ON BLOG ON THE WEEKEND.

Religion
Our gospel reading for the second week of Lent was the TRANSFIGURATION. What happened when Jesus took Peter, James and John up the mountain. Why did he bring them there? How will you climb your mountain during Lent to grow close to Jesus? Share with a parent what you would do and say if Jesus appeared to you.

Olympics
Tomorrow we have our last newspaper clippings to add to our scrapbook. Make sure you have collected enough on your athlete, sport, country and Canada.

Science
We began our new Science unit today, Properties of  Matter. Throughout the unit we will be conducting investigations and learning the steps used during a science experiment or investigation. Many of you knew these three states of matter, but did you know there are others? What are these three states?
Image result for states of matter
These are the other states (very uncommon, but they do exist). We will not study them.

Olympics
The torch has been extinguished and the winter games are over. We have had lots of fun following the Olympics over the past two weeks. We will wrap up our unit this week. You will have until the end of the week to complete your scrapbook. Tomorrow you will begin your paragraph on a Canadian athlete. Next will be a news article about your chosen country. Last we will do some graphing using the medal counts in different countries.

Do you know who carried the flag for Canada at the closing ceremonies?
Do you know where and when the next winter Olympics will take place?
What were the top three moments of the Olympics for you? Why?

Math
Time test on this week. Please review for the test!

Grade 4 and 5 Sample Time Test Questions
·         What time is it?
·         How would you say the time?
The strategy we used the most was a number line. You can also use subtraction (make sure you change to 24-hour clock and regroup 1 hour as 60 minutes) or an actual clock.

Find end time knowing start and elapsed time.
What time will it be 25 minutes after 3:15 p.m.?
·        What time will it be 1 hour 13 minutes after 4:55 p.m.?
·        What time will it be 8 hours 30 minutes after 10:45 a.m.?

Find elapsed time knowing start and end time.
·         About how much time has passed between 3:20 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. the same day?
·         About how much time has passed between 10:25 a.m. and 6:13 p.m. the same day?

Longer units of time:
·         How many years in 2 centuries?
·         How many years in 3 decades?
·         How many decades in 4 centuries?
·         How many years in 2 millenniums / millennia?
·         How many years in 1 century and 6 decades?

When do you think a digital clock is more helpful than an analogue clock (clock with fact and hands)?

Would you use the same strategy to calculate the amount of time between 7:35 a.m. and 2:12 p.m. as you would to calculate the amount of time between 7:35 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.? Explain.

Grade 5 Time Test Questions Only
How many days are there between March 5, 2018 and April 18, 2018?
How many days are there between June 24, 2018 and August 3, 2018?

A movie starts late in the morning and ends in the afternoon. It is 1 hour and 55 minutes long. When could the movie have started and ended? Show your work.

Track and Field tryouts are 6 weeks and 3 days from today. What is the date of Track and Field tryouts? Show your work.

Do you think it is important to have a second hand on a clock? When would it be useful?

Math
Everyone did a wonderful job completing the "Action Task" with your group today. Mrs. Nathoo was very impressed with your collaboration skills. Everyone was on-task and thinking. The second part of the task used a problem strategy that we have not used before, WORKING BACKWARDS. If you know the change that you get back from $100, you work backwards to get the total cost of three items, then use mental math to find a combination of three numbers that add to the total cost.

For example:
If you got $16 change from $100, the total cost would be $100 - $16. Time for a mental math strategy!
Some students subtracting back in chunks.
$100 - $10 - $6 = $84
Some students adding up to the total cost.
$16 + ___ = 100
$16 + $4 = $20
$20 + $80 = $100 , so the total cost is $80 + $4 = $84

Next you have to figure out a combination of three numbers that add to $84.

Some students used guess and test using the money. Some students made magic tens.

38 + 32 = 70 so the last item must be $14

Please complete practice exercises in your MathUP duotang.
Practice counting money after playing the game.
Take a good look at the symbols, people and places on the different bills. Do you know who or what they are and why they are on a Canadian bill?

Literacy
Tomorrow you will be given a copy of your "script" to practice. Try to memorize your part. If you have difficulty memorizing it, at least practice until you can read the words so they sound like two people having a conversation.

Olympics
As our unit on the Olympics draws to  an end, we will be completing several writing and math assignments based on the information you collected. Keep working hard. Canada's medal count keeps going up!

Reminders:

  • Off-uniform tomorrow
  • Elapsed time test on Tuesday.

Literacy
Today during bell work we talked about subject PRONOUNS. Pronouns replace nouns.
Image result for pronouns

So if you had to replace "the girl" in a sentence, what would you use?
The girl couldn't find her mittens.
She couldn't find her mittens.

Mrs. Lucier and I went to Tim Hortons.
We went to Tim Hortons.

All groups have chosen a scene from "The One and Only Ivan" to present to the class. I will photocopy the pages for you to practice reading DRAMATICALLY at home.

Math
We reviewed our mental math strategies and talked about a new subtraction strategy, adding up. This is something that we already do when we find elapsed time on a number line. For example,
72 - 47
We change the subtraction question to an addition question.
47 + ___ = 72
47 + 3 = 50
50 + 20 = 70
70 + 2 = 72

Find the sum of all the "adding up" 3 + 20 + 2 = 25
72 - 47 = 25

Today we also started estimating and counting money. Our strategy for estimating amounts was just counting the dollar amounts (bill, toonies and loonies). Most of the counting is done in our head. We do a running total. Always count the money with the greatest value first. Please get your math signed and checked by a parent.

We were able to catch up with our Bell Work. Some students are still a bit behind. Look for the sticky notes in your book on Tuesday!

Religion
Ash Wednesday marked the beginning of the season of Lent. During this Lenten season, please think about something that you will do to show that you are "walking in the footsteps of Christ". It's great to make a sacrifice and give up things, but it's also important to DO something. As well, think about five verbs that will describe your actions during this Lenten season e.g. help, pray, forgive ....  You will be writing your ideas on a footprint on Tuesday.

Math
On Friday we reviewed our different addition mental math strategies and talked about two subtraction strategies.
Addition:
Making friendly numbers (multiples of 10)
47 + 29
47 + 3 = 50
50 + 20 = 70
70 + 6 = 76

Decomposing numbers (using expanded form)
47 + 29
40 + 20 = 60
7 + 9 = 16
60 + 10 + 6 = 76

Doubles
39 + 39
40 + 40 = 80
80 - 2 = 78 (must subtract 2 because you added 1 to each 39)

Adding in chunks
47 + 29
47 + 20 = 67
67 + 9 = 76 (you could also add 10 then take one away)

Compensation
47 + 29
46 + 30 = 76 (took one away from 47 and gave it to 29)

You can also combine any of these strategies.

Subtraction:
Counting back (this strategy is only appropriate when you are subtracting a 1 digit number)
85 - 9 (think of the related fact, 15 - 9 = 6)
85 - 9 = 76 (ones place is the same, the tens is one less)

Creating an easier question:
70 - 28 (if we subtract 1 from each number the difference remains the same)
69 - 27 = 42 (subtract tens and ones easily because there is no regrouping)

The goal is to be able to add and subtract any two digit numbers. Try these using your mental math strategies.

58 + 17
50 - 26
41 - 8
39 + 46
29 + 28

Reminders:

  • Complete your Mathletics assignments
  • Don't forget to catch a bit of the Olympics

Olympics
Make sure you are using the newspaper to read articles and cut out pictures and articles related to your country, event or Team Canada. Keep your medal count up to date.

Student Led Conferences
Most students practiced their conference with a partner. If you didn't get a chance, please do so tomorrow. We have MANY outstanding report card envelopes. Please return them as soon as possible.

Math
Finish your review questions on the 24 - hour clock. Remember the magic number is 12 for changing from the 12 to 24 hour clock or the 24 to 12 hour clock. Don't forget your Mathletics assignments.

Religion
Today we begin the holiest time of year for Catholics, Lent. What do we remember on this day?
We are invited to follow Jesus into the Desert
Here's a kid friendly video:

Olympics
Another 3 medal day for Canada. Do you know who won medals today? Are you keeping track of the medals won by Canada and your country in your scrapbook? You are welcome to cut articles and pictures about Canadian Olympians, your chosen Canadian Olympian and your country from the newspaper. Just make sure everyone has read before you cut.
Canada's Kaitlyn Lawes and Canada's John Morris hold the Canada flag on the podium after winning the gold medal in mixed curling at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games on February 13, 2018.
Math
We had lots of fun today flying to different destinations across the globe. Make sure you read instructions carefully. Everyone knows how to change from 24 to 12 hour clock, but not everyone got the action task correct. We will finish the "On Your Own" questions tomorrow.

Learning Skills
We spent a considerable amount of time this afternoon preparing for our student led conferences. Make sure you include an explanation on your sticky note. It will help you remember what to say to your parents. You must finish tomorrow morning. We will have a quick practice before the Ash Wednesday service in the afternoon.

Literacy
Yesterday we finished our novel. Did you like the ending? We have a couple of culminating activities to do after the Olympics.

Reminders:

  • Ash Wednesday service at 2:00 pm at St. Nicholas.
  • Flag day on Thursday, wear RED

I will post more events tomorrow.

Math
Today we talked about writing the date in numeric format.
YEAR - MONTH - DATE

February 10, 2018 would be written 2018 - 02 - 10

There must be four digits in the year and two digits in the month and date.

Try these:
Your birthday, siblings birthday, mom or dad's birthday

When we write the time in numeric format, we use the 24-hour clock and add the seconds.

If Bob was born on June 1, 2003 at 15 minutes and 3 seconds after 4:00 pm, we write in numeric form:

2003 - 06 - 01    16:15: 03

There are many ways to express the date numerically. This is just one way.

Reminders:
  • Complete your MATHLETICS assignments
  • Report card envelope and last page signed (complete your section)
  • Interview sheets returned
  • Valentine's Day card exchange is TUESDAY. There is a class list on Thursday's post. Handing out cards is optional of course
  • Pancake Tuesday is this week. I will supply the pancakes and syrup. If you would like to bring some NUT-FREE toppings for your pancakes, feel free

Literacy
We are almost to the end of the novel......... did Ivan's play work? Do you think Ivan will every see Ruby, Bob, Julia or George again?

Math
Today we talked about the 24-hour clock. The difference between the 24-hour and 12- hour clock is no times is repeated so there is no am or pm written after the time. Here is a little chart to compare the times on the different clocks (we write the colon : between the hour and minute in both the 24-hour and 12-hour clock):

Some analogue clocks have the 12 and 24- hour numbers on the clock:
Notice that the 24-hour clock must be written: ___  ___: ____ ____

Here's some extra practice:

Social Studies
Great job coming up with a variety of reasons why people move FROM a region. Some students had difficulty identifying the natural resources in the physical regions we have studies. The information is in your notebook AND  in the textbook. Use the headings in the textbook to find the correct page in each chapter.

Reminders:
  • Because is it Ash Wednesday next week (February 14th), we will be celebrating Valentine's Day on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 13TH. (I just received this message from the office). Bring in your cards for TUESDAY.

Math
We continued working with time. We can find the elapsed time knowing the start and end time. We can find the end time knowing the start time and the elapsed time. Finally, we can find the start time knowing the end time and the elapsed time.

Joseph is driving to Kingston with his family. They leave at 6:15 am. It takes them 5 hours and 24 minutes. What time did they arrive in Kingston?

We can use a number line:

We can also add:

6 hours 15 minutes
5 hours 24 minutes
11 hours 39 minutes = 11:39 am

They will arrive at 11:39 am.

Some extra practice:

Make sure you complete your test corrections and homework.

Literacy
Ivan used his anger today. Why? What do you think will happen to Ruby? Ivan? Make sure your group completes their character traits cards.

Social Studies
The Canadian Shield has 5 climate zones. Why? The explore and apply questions is opposite to the question we answered when we studied the Cordillera. Why do people MOVE AWAY from a region?

Reminders
  • Physical Education tomorrow.... gymnastics so have your gym clothes at school. Girls, remember to tie back your hair and no jewelry.
  • Candy-grams are on sale tomorrow. 1 for 50 cents and 3 for 1 dollar

Science
Everyone did a magnificent job sharing their habitat projects with the primary division. All the younger students enjoyed listening to the description of your animal and its habitat. Make sure your rubric is signed and returned.

Phys. Ed.
Everyone has presented a routine on mats. The next assessment will be developing a routine on equipment. Remember to follow the rules during gym times and have your gym clothes at school.

Math
Today we began elapsed time, the amount of time that passes between one time and another or the amount of time it takes to complete an activity. The strategy that we used today was a counting up using a number line.

Nathan begins watching a movie at 6:47 pm and finished at 9:35 pm. How long was the movie?

Step 1: Draw a number line and label the start and end time.
Step 2: Count up to the nearest ten minutes.
Step 3: Count up to the nearest hour.
Step 4: Count up to the end time hour.
Step 5: Count up to the remaining minutes.
Step 6: Add all the times.

Try these:
Reminders:

  • We will be doing STUDENT LED CONFERENCES this term during interview time. Each student is responsible for coming to school in the evening with a parent to share your successes and areas that need improvement. Each conference will be about half an hour in length. A letter will go home with your report card on Friday.
  • Finish your Mathletics assignments.
  • If you are on "Share a Book" make sure you practice your reading for tomorrow.

Monday, 5 February 2018

Math
Today we began studying time. Please complete the assigned pages in your booklet as a review. Use the links for the weekend and from past posts practice telling time to the nearest minute. Some language you should be familiar with:

  • half past
  • quarter to
  • quarter past
We also looked at different units of time: decades, centuries and millennia. Try these questions.
What was the year:
2 centuries ago
2 millennia ago
7 decades ago

What will be the year:
in 5 millennia
in 3 decades
in 4 centuries

Tomorrow we will start with elapsed time.

Literacy
Ivan remembered some terrible memories about his mother and father. Why do you think Ivan refers to his domain as a cage?

Social Studies
We ran out of time to do the talking chips properly. Please review the climographs on page 52. Practice making conclusions about the temperature and precipitation in the five cities. Remember the bars are precipitation and the scale is on the RIGHT. The line is temperature and the scale is on the LEFT. It doesn't make sense to have precipitation with negative numbers! The units are different as well. Precipitation is mm and temperature is degrees Celsius.

Reminders:
  • Tomorrow we will showcasing our habitats for the younger students. Make sure you animal summary is done tomorrow.
  • Gymnastics in Phys. Ed class tomorrow
  • Candy-grams go on sale on Wednesday
  • Share a book students, make sure you practice for Wednesday (Joseph, Chloe, Ryerson)
  • Jameson and Ella be prepared to present your part in "The Captain's Faith"

Sunday, 4 February 2018

Art
We spent most of the day working on our Ted Harrison-styled masterpieces. Thank you for working so hard. Some are completed. One more week and they should be done.

Religion
The last of the plays were presented on Friday. Unfortunately, some actors were absent. You still have to present your part, so be prepared. The costumes were great!

Math
Our class is on fire with respect to Mathletics. Keep working hard. If you have problems with a particular assignment, please let me know. I try not to assign topics that we haven't already studied in class. Sometimes the preview doesn't give a full picture of all the types of questions. Be proud of your certificates!

Reminders:

  • Practice telling time using link from previous post. We won't spend too much "time" telling time. Our focus will be elapsed time.
  • Choose your Canadian Olympic athlete to follow. Make sure you know his/her sport.

Literacy
Wow, Ruby stood her ground today and we all cheered! Do you remember the seeds of hope that Julia planted?

Math
Before we move onto Number Sense in Math, we have to finish time. If you are not very good at telling time on an ANALOGUE clock (a clock with hands), here are some games to practice:
https://www.education.com/games/time/

Finish your Mathletics assignments!

Religion
Last group to present tomorrow. Remember the importance of using body gestures and showing expression with your voice and face.

Social Studies
Today we summarized the physical characteristics of the Canadian Shield. Some key ideas you should remember for today.....
Is the Canadian Shield a good area for farming?
Where are deciduous forests? Why?
How do the physical features affect what the people do in the Canadian Shield?

Phys. Ed.
So many wonderful gymnastics routines. We will watch the rest next week.

Olympics
The Winter Olympic Games begin next week. Check our the CBC website. Choose a Canadian athlete to report on at the end of the games. What Olympic sport are you most interested in learning more about? Choose a sport that you're not familiar with.
